Native v. Web-based Mobile Apps

The landscape for Mobile use is constantly changing and at New Target, we are actively engaged in this conversation and process. We were interested to see a recent blog post by Luke Wroblewski, the former Lead User Interface Designer at eBay, reporting that Twitter, Facebook and Financial Times get more use on their Mobile websites, or web-based apps, than on their native Mobile apps. It has spurred on further conversations in our office around the use of native mobile applications versus web-based mobile applications.

Mobile Usability

This past month New Target sent our website usability team to the 2011 User Focus Conference which is put on by the DC Chapter of the Usability Professionals Association. This conference is one of the many ways we stay actively engaged in the new methods, latest trends, and best practices for user-centered design, responsive design, and more.

Of all the topics and sessions, we were drawn to the Mobile Usability panel the most, as we have been increasingly busy developing Mobile apps and websites for our clients. John Whalen, Jim Jarrett, and Nicole Burton discussed with the audience their experience and research in this field. A few interesting facts we learned included:

Are you getting the mobile version on your Android phone?

The majority of Android devices, phones and tablets, have a setting in the browser that changes what the device looks like to the website you are visiting.  This “report” is called the User Agent or UA. In most cases, the choices are Desktop or Android/Mobile.  Some browsers even allow it to report itself as an iPhone!

Whichever device you are using, check the settings to see if it is running as a Desktop browser or as an Android/Mobile browser.  Using the Android/Mobile browser could significantly reduce your monthly data usage, while still enjoying all the sites have to offer.
